THE RESERVE

They found him dead by the roadside, mistook him for a dog, and alerted the state police. Rumors began to spread that the butchers were slaughtering and selling dogs. Bala said that he found part of a dog’s tail in the half a kilo of Ajaali* he bought from the market. After the veterinary committee dissected the animal found on the road, it was discovered that it was not a dog, but rather a fox. Because it was left without its head and skin, people assumed it was a dog.
Salih panicked when he couldn’t find Damdum – a ba’shom* – who Salih and his father had saved and raised together, after his mother was killed near the Reserve** by a hunter’s bullet. He quickly informed his father, worried sick that Damdum might be the dead fox.
Salih’s father owned a carpentry workshop, and always took Salih with him to work. Salih was passionate about life and had an adventurous spirit. He collected wood from the forest near the Reserve with his father, and when they returned, he would make miniatures out of the wood leftovers, recreating the animals he saw there. His father, so impressed by what his son made, called him a little genius.
The Reserve was five kilometres away from Salih’s village, and it was Salih’s favourite place, where he got to explore 1,500 species of plants, 38 species of animals, and 200 species of birds.
Salih loved Damdum very much and hid him from everyone, specifically from Bala, whom people called the Crocodile of the Hilla*** because he was famous for torturing and killing animals. No pet, stray dog, or weak bird in the entirety of the Hilla was safe because of him.
Bala struggled during childhood. He was wired differently which caused some to question his intelligence, and because he wasn’t social or outgoing, he spent most of his time sitting alone, daydreaming in the innocent and playful space he created for himself. His father had no idea how to accept a son so different, he wanted him to grow up to become strong and independent, so that he could depend on him in his old age. This ill feeling towards his son made him violent and rude, which made Bala’s life even more difficult. As the father’s violence and bad treatment continued, Bala took out his anger by trapping animals. He comforted his burning soul by torturing them and calmed his angry heart by killing them.
His father died when he was fifteen years old, and he continued practicing evil in the world. He hunted and profited from the animal trade and poachers of tigers, leopards, foxes, rabbits, giraffes, and gazelles. He knew all the roads leading to the reserve, the times of its opening and closing, and the whereabouts and behavior of each animal.
Bala perfected deceiving the wildlife police and left no evidence behind. Salih suspected that Bala was the one who killed Damdum, so he watched him for a while until the day when three men with light hair and green eyes visited Bala’s house. They carried rectangular bags on their backs. Bala welcomed them warmly but with apprehensiveness. Minutes later, they came out, Salih followed them, treading lightly and cautiously.
They took a secret path that ended up inside the Reserve. They took out strange rifles from their bags and started hunting. Saleh saw a gazelle running freely and cheerfully, then with one shot, he fell dead. He rushed to his father’s workshop, gasping for breath, and told him that poachers were using silencers on their rifles and killing animals in the Reserve. Salih and his father swiftly notified the police. Salih led them through the secret path that Bala and the poachers were using.
Salih and his father went to the police and Bala and the poachers were arrested. On their way home, Damdum appeared and began running towards Salih with a dead rat in his mouth. Salih was so relieved and overjoyed, but his father told him that it was time for Damdum to return to the Reserve, hunt his own prey, and live a normal life like the rest of the animals. His father continued, ‘That is the duty of man; to protect this life and help in its continuity, as it is.’

** The Reserve: This refers to the Dindir Reserve, which is one of the most famous natural reserves in Africa, located in the state of Sennar in Sudan

وجدوه على قارعة الطريق، وظنوا أنه كلب، فأبلغوا شرطة الولاية. انتشرت إشاعات تقول إن الجزارين يذبحون الكلاب ويبيعونها، وقال بله إنه وجد جزء من ذيل كلب عندما اشتري نصف كيلو عجالي من السوق. قامت اللجنة البيطرية بتشريح الشيء الذي وجد على الطريق، وصرحت بأنه ليس كلبا، لكنه ثعلب، وأنه وجد منزوع الرأس والجلد، فظنه الناس كلباً.
ذُعر صالح، وحكى لأبيه أن دمدوم مفقود ويخاف أن يكون هو من في المشرحة الآن. دمدوم هو البعشوم* الذي يربيه، وجدهُ بالقرب من المحمية**. وقد شهد هو ووالده اللحظة التي قتلت فيها أمه بطلقات أحد الصيادين.
يملك والد صالح ورشة نجارة، وكان يأخذ معه طفله الشغوف بالحياة والمحب للمغامرات، في كل مرة يذهب فيها لجمع الأخشاب من الغابة القريبة من المحمية. وبعد عودتهما، كان صالح يصنع من بقايا الأخشاب تماثيل لحيوانات رآها هناك، فينبهر والده بما صنع ويناديه بـ “العبقري الصغير”.
تبعد المحمية ٥ كيلومترات عن قريتهم، وهي المكان المفضل لصالح، يعرف فيها ١٥٠٠ نوع من النباتات، و٣٨ نوع من الحيوانات، و٢٠٠ نوع من الطيور.
أحب صالح دمدوم كثيراً وخبأه عن الجميع وبالتحديد عن بله الذي لقبه الناس بتمساح الحلة***، لأنه اشتهر بتعذيب الحيوانات وقتلها، فلم ينج منه قط أليف، ولا كلب ضال، ولا عصفور ضعيف، على مستوى الحلة.
عاش بَـله طفولة سيئة في صغره، كان يعاني من تأخر طفيف في ذكائه واستيعابه. ولأن قدراته المعرفية، ومهاراته الاجتماعية متواضعة، كان يجلس وحيداً ولا يختلط بالأطفال بل يطوف بعقله الذي كان جميلا، وبريئاً في الفضاء و يلعب وحده. كان والده عنيفاً و جلفاً في تربيته ،غير متفهم لحالته الخاصة كل ما يريده من الدنيا أن يصبح ولده رجلاً قوياً، وناضجاً في المستقبل ، حتى يعتمد عليه في شيبته. ومع استمرار عنف الوالد ومعاملته السيئة، أصبح بله يفرغ غضبه بحبس الحيوانات، لكي يريح روحه المشتعلة بتعذيبها، ويهدئ قلبه الغاضب بقتلها.
توفي والد بله، وترك الصبي في الخامسة عشر، يمارس الشر في العالم. لقد امتهن الصيد والربح عن طريق تجارة الحيوانات ومساعدة أصحاب الصيد الجائر؛ صائدي النمور، والفهود، والثعالب، والأرانب، والزرافات والغزلان. يعرف كل الطرق المؤدية إلى المحمية ومواعيد فتحها وإغلاقها وأماكن تواجد كل حيوان وسلوكه.
أجاد بله اللعب على شرطة الحياة البرية، فلا يترك أي دليل خلفه. لقد شك صالح في أن بله هو من قتل دمدوم، فأخذ يراقبه لفترة.. إلى أن جاء اليوم الذي زار فيه ثلاث رجال بشعر فاتح وعيون خضراء منزل بله. كانوا يحملون حقائب مستطيلة على ظهورهم، فأدخلهم بله بحفاوة وتوجس، وعندما خرجوا، تبعهم صالح بخفة وحذر.
سلك الرجال طريقاً سرياً انتهى بهم داخل المحمية. أخرجوا بنادق غريبة من حقائبهم وبدأوا بالصيد. رأى صالح الغزال يجري بحرية ومرح، ثم بطلقة واحدة يسقط مفارقاً الحياة. أسرع الي ورشة ابيه لاهث الأنفاس، أخبره أن الصيادين يستخدمون بنادق كاتمة للصوت ويقتلون الحيوانات في المحمية، وأرشده إلى الطريق السري الذي يستخدمه بله.
ذهب صالح ووالده إلى الشرطة، وتم القبض على بله ومن معه. وفي طريقهم إلى البيت اتى دمدوم يجري نحو صالح، وفي فمه فأر ميت. أخبره والده أنه قد حان الوقت ليرجع دمدوم إلى المحمية، يصطاد فريسته بنفسه، ويعيش حياة طبيعية ككل الحيوانات. وأن واجب الإنسان أن يحمي هذه الحياة، ويساعد في استمراريتها كما هي.
* البعشوم: الثعلب
** المحمية: يقصد بها محمية الدندر، وهي أشهر محمية طبيعية في أفريقيا، تقع في ولاية سنار في السودان
