The Cursed Tree

During the tenure of the ousted Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, a large number of saplings called ‘Dabas’ were imported into Sudan. It was later called the National Congress tree, which was the name of the ruling party at the time, headed by Al Bashir. The saplings grew at a remarkable speed. In three months, it shot up two to three metres high. The tree was in demand because it was cheap and grew quickly. The streets were soon filled with them. It was during this time that the presidential elections were held, and Al Bashir emerged winner.  

At that time, I met an acquaintance who worked within the party. I shared my observations about the conditions of the country and its deterioration. 

“How long will you rule us?”

He was fully aware that I was against their system, full of contempt, he spat “This tree, you see,” – by which he meant the symbol of the party – “its root is fixed and its branch is in the sky. Al zari’na ghair Allah, khaleel igla’na^*. No force will move us.”

To that, I replied, “If you believed in God completely, you would know that this world is fleeting. No rule lasts forever. The Ottoman Empire lasted nearly four hundred years. Where are they now?” 

“I am a believer,” he retorted. “I know that, but we, God willing, will last as long as possible in Sudan.” 

“Your fate is to disappear,” I said and went on my way.

Years later it became clear that the National Congress tree had a huge negative ripple effect, which spread nationwide. This parasitic tree spread its long, thin roots in search of water, crawling for many metres, uncontested. It slithered deep in the earth, tapping into and blocking the fresh water supply in the city. 

The news spread among the people, who contacted the workers of the Water Authority, and they carried out excavations. It became clear to the people that the reason for the lack of water in their houses was the roots of the National Congress tree, which blocked pipes. I remember they brought a skewer with a hooked end which was used to pull out large quantities of the fibre-like roots. I saw with my own eyes, in my neighbourhood, the water flowing after they took out the roots. The reason for the scarcity of water was confirmed.

Then a theory brewed in my head that the government had some secret agenda in importing the saplings of that ill-fated tree and that there also was a connection to making the tree the symbol of the party. I felt that uprooting the trees from all the neighborhoods in the cities, the government would fall.

After a while, the news of the damage to the National Congress tree spread widely, and indeed, many citizens began to cut it down and burn it from its roots. Some dug deep to uproot it, a foreshadowing of the events of Sudan’s 2019 revolution.

الشجرة الملعونة

حدث أيام حكم الرئيس السوداني المخلوع (عمر البشير)، أن تم استيراد كمية كبيرة من شتول شجرة اسمها الدبس، وسميت فيما بعد في السودان بشجرة (المؤتمر الوطني)، وهو اسم الحزب الحاكم آنذاك برئاسة البشير. كانت بعد ثلاث شهور فقط تتحول من شتلة لا يتجاوز طولها عشرون أو ثلاثون سنتيمترا، إلى شجرة بطول مترين ونصف، وأحيانا تصل إلى ثلاثة أمتار أو أكثر. قام أغلب المواطنين بشراء شتولها، لأنها كانت تباع بسعر رخيص، كما أنها تكبر بسرعة، فامتلأت شوارع المدن بها.

مرت الأيام، وأتت الانتخابات الرئاسية، التي فاز البشير بها، وهو صاحب رمز الشجرة. وخلال تلك الأيام التقيت بأحد المعارف يعمل ضمن منظومة الحزب الحاكم آنذاك، وتناقشت معه عن اوضاع البلد، وما وصلت إليه من تدهور، وقلت له: “إلى متى ستحكموننا؟ ألا يكفيكم كل هذه السنين التي عانينا فيها، وذقنا منكم فيها الأمرين؟” كان يعلم تماما أنني ضد نظامهم، فقال لي بكل ازدراء: “إن شجرتنا هذه (وكان يقصد رمز الحزب)، أصلها ثابت وفرعها في السماء”. وذكر لي مثلا بالعاميه السودانية، “والزارعنا غير الله خلي اليجي يقلعنا، ولن تزحزحنا اي قوة كانت”.

قلت له: “إن كنت مؤمنا بالله تماما، لعلمت أن هذه الدنيا زائلة لا محالة، استمرت فترة حكم الدولة العثمانية قرابة الـأربع قرون، فهل دام حكمهم حتى الآن؟” تغير وجهه وبدأ عليه بعض الضيق وقال لي متلعثما: “أنا مؤمن وأعلم بأن الحكم لن يدوم لأحد، ولكننا إن شاء الله سوف ندوم أطول فترة ممكنة في حكم السودان. 

“مصيركم الزوال”، ثم تركته وذهبت في حال سبيلي.

ومرت سنين منذ دخول الشتول إلى البلاد، واتضح مع الأيام أن هذه الشجرة قد صار لها تأثير سلبي كبير على نطاق البلد، فقد كانت تقوم بغلق أنابيب المياه، لأنها شجرة طفيلية، تبحث جذورها الطويلة الرفيعة عن الماء بصورة قد لا يتخيلها العقل. وبذلك استطاعت الوصول الى خطوط انابيب مياه الشرب وقامت بقفل المواسير. 

انتشر الخبر في أوساط الناس، وصاروا يستدعون عمال هيئة المياه الذين قاموا بالحفر، واتضح لهم جليا أن سبب عدم وصول المياه إلى المنازل هو جذور تلك الشجرة. فالجذور الرقيقة، تتسرب إلى الأنابيب والمواسير. اذكر أنهم كانوا يحضرون معهم سيخا (من الحديد)، يجعلو طرفة معقوفا، ثم يدخلونه إلى المواسير ويجذبونه، فتخرج كميات كبيرة من جذور الشجرة؛ تلك الجذور التي كانت تشبه الألياف. وقد رأيت ذلك يوما ما بعيني في حارتنا، وبعد أن يخرجوا الجذور يتدفق الماء وبذلك تأكد المواطنين من سبب شح المياه.

عندها تخمرت في رأسي نظرية، بأن الحكومة لها سر ما في استيراد شتول تلك الشجرة المشؤومة. وذلك له أيضا ارتباط في جعل رمز الحزب في الانتخابات (رمز الشجرة). كان لدي إحساس أن بمحاربة هذة الشجرة، ستسقط الحكومة. 

بعد فترة انتقل خبر أضرار هذه الشجرة بصورة كبيرة بين الناس، وفعلا بدأ العديد من المواطنين بقطعها وحرقها من جذورها، والبعض يحفرون عميقا من حولها ويقتلعونها من جذورها. وفي نفس الوقت وتزامنا مع محاربة الشجرة بدأت الحكومة في التقهقر والانزلاق الى أن سقطت فعلا في ثورة 2019.
